MJ is seeking an energetic, highly motivated professional senior planner to join the community planning group in our Clifton Park, NY office. MJ is a multi-year Best Places to Work awardee (Albany Business Review) and Top Workplaces (Albany Times Union).


POSITION SUMMARY:
MJ is actively seeking a planner to join our team to assist with current and exciting future projects. This job offering provides an exciting opportunity for the ideal candidate to grow and advance in MJ’s planning group. We are seeking a motivated candidate with a strong interest in urban and regional planning that is well organized, resourceful, and creative.
This full-time position will be responsible for leading projects focused on land use, downtown revitalization, environmental planning, complete streets, waterfront revitalization, resiliency, comprehensive planning, brownfield redevelopment, open space planning, zoning, grant writing and municipal planning support. Creative community engagement is at the heart of our planning processes. MJ planners work closely with other disciplines within the company such as transportation, GIS, site/civil engineering, landscape architecture, and water/wastewater engineering to prepare consensus-driven, reality-based plans that are implementable.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Opportunity available for candidates with five or more years of experience in planning or related field.
Bachelor’s degree in planning or a planning related field is required.
Master’s degree in planning or related field and AICP is preferred.
Excellent writing and verbal communication skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office is required.
Familiarity with ESRI ArcGIS, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Canva and/or SEQRA is desired.
TYPICAL SKILLS:
Excellent oral and written communication skills for preparing and presenting planning reports and projects.
Excellent interpersonal skills for facilitating relationships with elected/appointed officials, client or other decision makers.
Ability to multi-task on several projects simultaneously.
Ability to meet firm deadlines.
Ability to facilitate in person and virtual public participation activities.
Ability to communicate with multi-disciplined professionals and lead team-efforts.
Proven ability to independently solve problems using sound judgment.
TYPICAL FUNCTIONS:
Performs advanced professional work related to a variety of planning projects including research, writing and document production.
Provides professional planning assistance to client communities and municipal land use boards on varied land use and zoning issues.
Schedules and conducts meetings with project advisory boards, committees, community stakeholders and elected officials.
Prepares for and facilitates public engagement activities in support of planning projects.
Attends evening meetings as needed.
Supervises junior planners within the organization.

Compensation is based on the applicant’s experience and will be rated accordingly.
