Veteran Memorial Planned for Niskayuna Town Hall

Niskayuna's Town Hall will soon be getting a memorial to honor local veterans. The idea for a monument arose as Town officials and veterans realized there wasn’t a designated area to hold events which honor community members who have served in the military. The American Legion Post 1092, the VFW, and the Town joined together last year to form a committee to dictate the layout and logistics of constructing such a tribute.

MJ assisted the Town with preliminary concepts and completed the rendering (below) of the memorial free of cost.

The memorial will be built in front of Town Hall, where the flag posts stand today. Although the design plans are not final, the memorial will have bricks engraved with the names of veterans in the community. There will also be a place which recognizes each branch of the military.

The committee estimates that the cost to construct the memorial will be $25,000, which it plans to raise through various methods. One way the committee plans on raising the funds is through a “Buy a Brick” program. Families can order a brick and it will be engraved with a veteran’s name and placed in the memorial. This will help tie the memorial to the community and will also give community members the opportunity to support its construction.

The committee hopes to raise the funds and begin construction in the spring of 2017.
